PRIMARY 3 & 4
The Detective's Desk
From Reading to Strategic Deduction
By Primary 3 and 4, the gap begins to show.
Students are no longer asked only what happened. They are expected to explain why — and many don’t yet have the tools to do this well.
At The Detective’s Desk, we treat every paper as a set of clues. Instead of guessing or lifting answers, students learn how to investigate a text with precision.
Through carefully selected mystery texts, we train the habit that matters most at this stage: thinking before answering.
Explore our June mysteries below.

The P3 & P4 Paradox: When "Doing Well" Isn't Enough
Many Primary 3 and 4 students seem to be coping well with Paper 2.
They can find answers in the passage.
They score decently in school assessments.
But underneath that, a gap is forming.
When questions shift from “What happened?” to “Why did it happen?”, many students:
-
Copy without understanding
-
Miss the deeper clue
-
Or give answers that are only half-right
This is where marks start to slip quietly.
What's Really Going On?
How We Bridge the Gap
At this level, the challenge isn’t vocabulary or effort.
It’s how a student reads.
If a child cannot pick up on tone, intention, or hidden meaning, they will struggle to:
-
Answer Comprehension OE precisely
-
Explain their thinking clearly
-
Build a story that actually makes sense
Strong writing doesn’t start with writing.
It starts with seeing what others miss.
We train students to read like investigators.
Not just to find answers, but to understand:
-
What the writer is hinting at
-
Why a character behaves a certain way
-
How different clues connect across a passage
We use mystery texts because they demand exactly this kind of thinking.
-
Inference becomes investigation
-
Comprehension becomes clue-mapping
-
Writing becomes a clear, logical case report
This is how students move from “I think this is right” to “I can explain exactly why.”
Enter the Case Files
Each case file is a standalone workshop, built around a different text and set of challenges.
Choose the one that targets your child’s needs—or complete the full series to build consistency
across every component of the paper.
CASE FILE 01
The Idaville Files
Does your child often lose marks on "easy" questions because they missed a small detail?
This workshop is about the power of noticing. Just like Encyclopaedia Brown, we teach students to spot the one detail that proves the "obvious" answer isn't always the right one.
-
Building the habit of checking for accuracy in Grammar
-
Finding the exact evidence in Comprehension Open-ended
-
Learning to describe a scene so clearly that the reader can see exactly what the writer sees
This is a paragraph about your business. Let your visitors know who you are, what you do and what your website is all about. Double click on the text box to edit the text and add all the information you want to share.
CASE FILE 02
The Lemoncello Codes
Sometimes, English feels like a jumble of rules.
We show students how a sentence is built and how one idea leads to the next. Like solving a riddle, we practise how to re-arrange sentences in S&T and how to make a story flow naturally.
-
Moving away from "choppy" writing
-
Learning how cause-and-effect works in their reading and their stories
-
Making sure their compositions have a clear path from the beginning to a logical, satisfying end
Inspired by Encyclopaedia Brown: Boy Detective
Inspired by Escape from Mr Lemoncello's Library
CASE FILE 03
The Westing Protocol
Inspired by The Westing Game
This is where we tackle the hardest part of English: Inference.
The Westing Game is famous for its secrets.
We teach students to look for what isn’t being said—
the character's motives and hidden feelings.
-
Training the "mental muscles" needed to answer tricky "Explain why..." comprehension questions
-
Learning to "show, not tell" by using a character’s actions and words to reveal their personality
A Note on the Primary 3 & 4 Journey
We know that at the end of the day, the results on the report book matter.
But in English, a grade only tells us what happened—it doesn't tell us how to fix it.
Unlike Math or Science, where you can study a fixed list of topics, English is a skills-based subject.
There is no set "syllabus" for the passages your child will face in an exam.
They could be about anything.
This means we can’t ask them to memorise answers; we have to give them a toolkit that works on any text they encounter.
This is why we group by readiness rather than just age.
We look past the grade to find the "why" behind the mistakes:
-
For students building their foundation: We focus on technical accuracy. Before a child can solve a complex mystery, they need to be able to spot the small details and apply grammar rules without hesitation. We make sure the "basics" are rock-solid so they stop losing marks on things they actually know.
-
For students ready for the stretch: We focus on deductive logic. Once the foundation is there, we push them to read between the lines. We move past the simple facts and challenge them to explain motives, connect clues, and find a more sophisticated voice in their writing.
By meeting your child where they are today, we ensure they aren't just "doing more work", but building the specific skills they need to see that jump in their results.

The Sleuth's Toolkit
Every session is designed to help your child master the four critical areas where P3 and P4 marks are won or lost.
SKILL 01
Comprehension
Comprehension is about the hunt for keywords.
We show students how to find the evidence they actually need. This moves them away from "copy-pasting" and towards writing thoughtful, accurate answers that show understanding.
SKILL 03
Synthesis & Transformation
S&T is often the most frustrating part of the paper.
We teach students to approach this section like they are solving a puzzle. They learn the rules of combining and rearranging sentences without losing the original meaning or making "clunky" mistakes that cost marks.
SKILL 02
Grammar & Vocabulary
A single word can change the entire meaning of a story. Instead of memorising long lists, we use our mysteries to show how words work in context. Students learn to decode difficult vocabulary and spot the "tricky" traps in their grammar MCQ that usually lead to careless mistakes.
SKILL 04
Composition Writing
Writing shouldn't feel like a struggle to fill the page.
We show students how to take the clues they've found and turn them into a story that flows.
We focus on building a logical plot and writing descriptions that "show" instead of "tell".
